The danger of extinction of these wonderful animals is real and if we compare the amount of them at the beginning of this century when the population of these cats was about 100.000 animals living in the wild, now there are about 8.000 animals left. This particular subspecies is likely to lose its existence in less than 20 years if we continue to kill them. Recent estimates have revealed a dangerously sharp decrease in their population over the last decade. We have already lost three unique subspecies, and must do our best to save the remaining five ones.
