The female delivers her cubs in a well protected den and the kittens are born blind and they open their eyes at the age of two weeks. The cubs stay with their mother for a long time and sometimes they even live with her for five years. They learn how to hunt from their mother as she takes them on hunting trips and gives them a chance to practice this life-saving duty. They start hunting small and medium-sized game by age of 6 weeks, and begin to hunt without assistance at 1.5 years old.

The males usually find the females by their signs of urine deposits and tree scratches though usually the female has to look for a male herself, as the area is very big. The female carries her cubs for 3 or 3,5 months and there are usually 3 or 4 kittens in a litter. The cubs are born 103 days after insemination, and they are born blind and helpless. Females strive not to leave their dens for a long time and usually keep close to their young. For this reason, their home ranges are much smaller than those maintained by males.
