Tigers Pictures - Home Range

Tigers have different home ranges that vary from species to species. The size of a home range depends much on the quality of the habitat. Indian Tigers have smaller home ranges in comparison to Siberian Tigers. The poor prey availability in the Russian Far East compared to Nepal is substantial. Indian Tigers may have a home range of 8 square miles, whereas Siberian Tigers defend a territory of up to 200 square miles!

Tigers are territorial animals that do not allow same-sexed individuals to live within their home range. Males usually have larger home ranges than female tigers. The territory of a male Tiger overlaps with home ranges of one to seven females with which to mate. Female Tigers should have enough prey for themselves and their cubs.

Tigers Pictures - Reproduction

Generally, Tigers hunt and live alone (except a female with her cubs). However, individuals recognize each other by scent marks and scratches. Males and females meet during the breeding season and the female raises the cubs on her own. The gestation period is about 100-112 days after which 2-3 cubs are born. The Tiger cubs are blind and need care from their mother. A female Tiger gives birth in a dense cover.

The young ones are nursed by the age of 6 months. They have to learn a lot of things before leaving the mother and establishing their own home range. Gradually, by the age of 2 years, tigers become independent and leave the female. A litter is usually produced every two years.

The rate of mortality in young Tigers is rather high. Up to about 50% of Tigers die before the age of two years. Adult Tigers may die as the result of fights between males that defend their home ranges. The Tiger may live for about 15 years in the wild. Captive Tigers are known to live up to 20 years.
